Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   What will the weather be like?
A:   That is anybody's guess. Pelican is in a temperate rain forest. Annual rain fall is 240 inches a year or more! No, that isn’t a typo. That said, some summers have been non-stop rain and some have been unbelievably sunny and beautiful. Some days we will get every type of weather imaginable all in the same day. I bet I know what your next question will be.

Q:   What kind of clothes should I bring?
A:   Rain gear—head to toe, so: rain pants, hooded rain coat, and rubber boots. Under that you’ll want to dress in layers. Jeans or sweat pants, long-sleeve tees are good, or short-sleeve t-shirts, sweatshirts, or sweater. You get the idea—winter gear will not be required.

Q:   What else should I bring?
A:   Medications. Make sure you bring what you need plus a little extra. There is no pharmacy in Pelican. Non-drowsy formula drammamine or ginger root capsules for seasickness. Some people get seasick and some don’t and there’s no way of knowing ahead of time, so better safe than sorry. Toiletries, Camera &/or camcorder

Q:   What kind of fish can we catch?
A: We will be primarily fishing for king salmon (Chinook) or coho (silver salmon) and halibut. More than likely we'll catch some other species of fish as well, such as black bass, quill back or rock fish like yellow-eye. We may catch a ling cod, which can be a thrill since the big ones look like prehistoric monsters, but they are protected and have to be released if caught between June 15 and August 15.

Q:   What is the boat like?
A:   The boat is a 24 foot Bayliner Classic Express Sedan Cruiser. It is rigged with 2 electric Scotty downriggers. All fishing gear is provided, including rods, but feel free to bring your favorite rod and reel if you like. If you are wanting to come up with a party of more than four, don’t worry. Just contact us as soon as you can so that we can arrange to have a second boat and charter skipper available.

Q:   What are the best times to fish for the different kinds of fish?
A:   Mid-May—July 1: premium king salmon fishing
       July1—September 1: premium coho
Halibut can be caught all summer with July and August being somewhat better.

A special note: There is not a bank in Pelican. Most places accept credit and debit cards, but you may want to bring some cash with you. Also, cell phones do not work in Pelican, unless you walk up the dump hill. You may want to have a calling card. You will be able to get a signal for your cell phone while you are out fishing. It's just that the city of Pelican is at the wrong angle for the receivers. If you need to get on the internet while you are staying with us, we can accommodate you, but we encourage people to try to leave the 21st century behind and just relax and enjoy themselves.
